I can find fractions, decimals and percentages of amounts expressed as whole numbers, simple fractions and decimals.

Link to modelling book.

Link to Extended Abstract task.

I found the last two activities on google docs easy because on IXL you have to answer heaps of questions to complete it but on the doc you only have to answer a few questions and show your working out.

Distinction Evidence: Kapa Haka 10

The other day I had Kapa Haka. I turned up with my poi even though I didn't think I needed to use it. When we got there we got in our new lines from last time. Some people that were away had to be sorted into the lines according to height.

After we sorted out the lines, the boys went on the stage and the girls went underneath the stage. Then we went through the the songs, I knew all of them because we had learn them the week before.

We practiced the routine performance and the teachers reminded us to remember where we were in the lines do they didn't need to sort them out again. Most of the songs we are singin but are school songs or ones that we have previously learnt. Two of the songs we are learning are songs with actions, when we started the first one most of us didn't know all of the actions so we copied the people that did know. When the song finished the teachers showed us the actions and we ran through the song one more time.

After we finished they told us that we could leave for morning tea.

The care value I showed was respect by listening to the teacher.
I showed leadership by listening to the teachers when the were teaching us the actions.
I was a role model by not talking over top of the teachers.

Distinction Evidence: Deputy Head Girl 10

The other day I had Student Council. There was nothing new we needed to talk about so we decided to review everything. We talked about the mufti day we will be having and what the theme will be, we made sure everyone told there classes that the theme would be sports stars. We also decided that the pet would be changed to another date which we would discuss with Mrs Trotter. Then we reviewed ideas for the fun day at the end of the year, we only looked at the ideas that would actually be able to happen.

Below is the minutes that I took for the meeting. We didn't have Mrs Trotter there with us because she was busy, so we no teacher helping to run the meeting. We also didn't have any homework for this meeting because we didn't talk about anything different.

Parliment

This term we have been learning about Parliament. We have looked at the difference between government and parliament, NZ parliament, who is in government, how our government works and we compared democracy to dictatorship.

Three things that I learned are NZ parliament are:

  • The Speaker of the house is called David Carter
  • The Sergeant-of-arms carries the mass
  • The Deputy Prime Minister sits in the 3rd seat

Here is the link to my compare and contrast map explaining the difference between democracy and dictatorship.

Distinction Evidence: Technology 5

On Tuesday the year 7&8's went to Technology. When I was on the bus I made sure that I was quiet and that I was only talking to the person next to me not anyone else.

Once we got to Lincoln we went to the Woodworks room and got our stuff ready. Then we did some sanding before we left for Mandarin.

After that we left for Mandarin and revisited some of the things we learnt in the past and learnt how to say what is there name in Mandarin.

After Mandarin Mr Bowers attached our table top to the legs and told us to sand over the bit the he sanded. He also taught us how to beeswax. The beeswax smell like gas but when we put it on the wood it didn't smell and it actually made the table shiny.

After we were done we packed up and then we got to take our table home with us on
the bus and headed back to school. I made sure I was only talking to the person next to me and whispering.

The care value I was showing was Respect because I respected the bus driver when I was on the bus.
I showed leadership by helping others with the beeswax.
I was being a good role by not talking to people that weren't sitting next to me on the bus.

Distinction Evidence: Kapa Haka 9

Yesterday I had Kapa Haka. I turned up with my poi even though I didn't think I needed it. When we got there we got in our lines. Then the teachers talked to us about how they were going to change our lines up, so instead of lining up in age groups we were lining up in height. So four year eights stood in the centre in a line, I was one of them. Then they got everyone else to line up on each side height wise.

After we sorted out the lines, the boys went on the stage and the girls went underneath the stage. Then we went through the the songs, I knew all of them but one because I was away the week before.

We went through the whole routine then when we finished, the teachers told us that we were going to perform at the Gala, the Senoir Citizens Concert and possibly the Prize Giving.

After that they told us that we could leave.

The care value I showed was respect by listening to the teacher.
I showed leadership by listening to the teachers when the were showing us where to stand.
I was a role model by not talking over top of the teachers.

Distinction Evidence: Deputy Head Girl 8

On Monday this week I had a meeting with Mrs Trotter (the principal) and the other heads. It was at 11:00, that's at morning tea, so we brought our food with us.

We talked about the mufti day and just if we were going to have face painting and stuff like that.

After that Mrs Trotter told us about the student council photo that we took and asked us to get the names of all of the student council members. We started to do the top row because they were all year seven and eights. Then when we got to the second row we didn't know there names so we decided to go back to class and leave it for later.

After a while Hannah and I decided to go around the classes and get there student council members names. Hannah held the photo and I had a paper and pen so I could write the names. We went around all of the classes and got all of the names.

Once we were done we took it back to the office.

The care value I showed was excellence because I decided that we should get it done before we forget.
I showed leadership by turning up to the meeting.
I was a role model by listening to the principal while she was talking.

Distinction Evidence: Technology 4

On Tuesday the year 7&8's went to Technology. When I was on the bus I made sure that I was quiet and that I was only talking to the person next to me not others around me.

Once we got to Technology we went to the Woodworks room and got our stuff out. Then we did some sanding before we left to go to Mandarin.

After that we left for Mandarin and revisited some of the things we learnt in the past and played a game where we had characters and we said 'there name is _____' in Mandarin.

After Mandarin Mr Bowers attached all of our table legs together and gave us some little wooden stub things to put in the holes that the nails were in. We had to hammer them in and it was really hard because you had to position it perfectly and if you hammered the wrong place it would damage your table, so we helped each other. Once we did that Mr Bowers sanded the ends off so it wasn't sticking out.

After we were done we packed up and then got on the bus and headed back to school. I made sure I was only talking to the person next to me and using a quiet voice.

The care value I was showing was Respect because I respected the bus driver when I was on there bus.
I showed leadership by helping others with the hammering.
I was being a good role by not talking to people that weren't on my seat on the bus.

Distinction Evidence: Kapa Haka 8

Today I had Kapa Haka.  One of the the songs we are learning is called Tenei Matou, it's one of the old songs that Oaklands performed in the Cultural Festival in 2014. Another song is Ka Waita.

We started by going over Ka Waita a few times so we could warm up.

Then we went onto Tenei Matou we went over the actions. We went over them heaps of times to make sure everyone knew them.  But I think we should've spent more time on the song than the actions because I still don't know the whole song. But I just hum, and do the actions. The actions to Tenei Matou are really fun.

I really hope that the if we do any other actions to other songs they will be cool actions like Tenei Matou.

The care value I showed was respect by listening to the teacher.
I showed leadership by listening to the teachers when the were showing us the actions.
I was a role model by not talking over top of the teachers.

Distinction Evidence: Technology 3

On Tuesday we had Technology. When I was on the bus I made sure that I was quite and that I was only talking to the person next to me not others around me.

Once we got to Technology we went to the Woodworks room and got our stuff out. Then we did some sanding before went went to Mandarin.

After that we left for Mandarin and learnt numbers 1-100.

We went back to Woodwork and got four new pieces. Mr Bowers taught us how to use a chisel to cut out a piece on wood on each of the four pieces. It started off hard but then it got easier on each piece.

After that we got on the bus and headed back to school. I made sure I was only talking to the person next to me and using a quite voice.

The care value I was showing was Respect because I respected the bus when I was on it.
I showed leadership by helping other with the cutting.
I was being a good role by not talking to people around me.

Improvisation Drama Reflection

WALT apply the techniques of improvisation to a range of different scenarios.

Improvisation TECHNIQUES that I have used successfully are always say yes because I keep the performance going by not killing it. Also listen because I listen to the people before me or with me so I know what to say.

Improvisation TECHNIQUES that I would like to have more practice at are establish a who, when & a where because when I don't it gets hard to carry on the performance not knowing what to say.

The thing that I enjoyed most about this unit of learning was the games because it was fun acting as characters that I would never want to be.

The thing that I found most challenging during this unit of learning was actually getting up and doing it in front of other people because I was nervous and sometimes didn't know how to act out the certain character.

My favourite improvisation game was family picture because it was funny watching people in a freeze frame while on a roller-coaster or a fancy restaurant etc.

My next step/ something I need to work on further  in improvisation is to be more confident and be able to think on my feet because I'm not and I can't but I would like to be able to.

Talent Show

On Wednesday we had the final of the Kauri Talent Show 2016. Us head students and Mr McCallum organised it. We had a guy that runs a programme at school to host it. We had seven acts in total performing.

We had organised people to do the curtains and getting the performers backstage, on the doors, making sure people don't get in without paying, getting tables and chairs for the judges and chairs for the audience.

It was really cool and we had some really good acts in the show. Some dancers, some singers. The prizes we had for the tops three were chocolate and gift vouchers.

For the auditions it was us four heads and Mr McCallum judging. Then for the semifinals it was some teachers and the finals were different teachers.

The care value I showed was excellence because I stepped up and help organise it.
I showed leadership by not sitting around doing nothing, actually helping.
I was a role model by respecting the acts eg: clapping at the right time, not booing.

Distinction Evidence: Kapa Haka 7

The other day I had Kapa Haka.  One of the the songs we are learning is called Tenei Matou, it's one of the old songs that Oaklands performed in 2014. Another song is Ka Waita.

We started by going over Ka Waita a few times so we could get our volume up. Then Mr Brown moved all of the seniors to the front and the younger kids and to the back. Then we tried singing Ka Waita with the years fours singing the first verse and then the seniors come in for the last verse.

Then we went onto Tenei Matou we went over the actions. We went over them heaps of times to make sure everyone knew them.  But I think we should've spent more time on the song than the actions because I still don't fully know the song. Then we sang Tenei Matou faster than usual and I thought it was really fun. (And they put the lyrics on screen.)

I really hope that the if we do any other actions to other songs they will be as fun as Tenei Matou

The care value I showed was community by listening to the speaker.
I showed leadership by listening to the teachers when the were showing us the actions.
I was a role model by not talking while the teachers were talking.

KORU GAMES

The activity I did was Touch Rugby.
Two Highlights were,
When I got moved up to the A team.
When my ankle felt better and I could play.
I'm proud of when I got to play in the A team because I haven't been in one before.
Some advice on Koru Games for next years year 7's is to not worry about losing just have fun!

Distinction Evidence: Kapa Haka 6

The other day I had Kapa Haka. When we got there we all sat down in our rows and talked about how the cultural festival went. Mr Brown said that the people organising it said that we were one of the best groups that went up on stage. That was because of our transitions, our volume, our actions and our pride. I was wondering if we were going to keep practicing the original songs or different ones; turns out we are doing different ones. One of the the songs we are learning is called Tenei Matou, it's one of the old songs that Oaklands performed in 2014.

We started by singing the first part over and over until everyone got it. Then we sang the second part until everyone got it. After that we sang the song a few times just so everyone would remember it.

Then we went onto the actions, we were able to watch the 2014 performance so we could learn the actions. It was really fun learning the actions because they were quite easy. But a few times I did the wrong action and just laughed it off.

I really hope that the other songs that we do will be as fun as Tenei Matou.

The care value I showed was community because I helped some people when they didn't know the actions.
I showed leadership by listening to the teachers when the were showing us the actions.
I was a role model by not talking while the teachers were talking.

To show my leadership qualities I am a role model to others in the CARE values by doing/showing these leadership traits: Responsibility, Trustworthy, Integrity.

On the CARE SOLO matrix below I am at this SOLO level: Extended Abstract because: I can show the CARE values independently.

Distinction Evidence: Kapa Haka 5

On Tuesday night, there was the Canterbury Cultural Festival for 2016. Oaklands School was performing in this Cultural Festival, which was very exciting.

I got there at 6:00 and went to the meeting place that the teachers set for us. It was so cool to see everyone in there costumes. All of the girl wore headbands and the year eight girls (that had there ears pierced) wore feather earrings as well.

We went inside and sat down in our seats, we watched all of the performances because we were last, then we left our seats and went backstage. It was really cool to go backstage. We lined up in the lines that we would go in on stage, walked up on stage. I was really nervous at first but then once we started I wasn't. The first song was Hareruia, then we sang Tuhurihuri, where I do long poi, then our school song, Taitupu.

After that everyone moved to one side and we sang He Honore with another school. And that was the end of the Cultural Festival, a really fun song came on while people were leaving and we all started dancing on stage, it was really fun.

This is a link to the video of our performance: https://youtu.be/lv02Tadm7DY

The care value I showed was Community because I have a performance for the community to enjoy.
I showed leadership by not taking during the performance or other people's performances.
I was a role model by respecting the teacher when they were trying to get us in line.

Distinction Evidence: Koru Games 2

Day 1

Day one of Koru games started great. I'm in the B team. I was really excited and it was cool because we meet up right before the game and it was about to be the first real game I played with my team.

Then during practice/warm-up I rolled my ankle. I was so annoyed so I walked around and tried to stretch it out. Then Mr Ladbrook put me on the field to play. I could play alright but it still hurt, then I decided that I should not play that day and then I could play day two and three.

Then later in the day it became so sore I couldn't stand. But by the time we got on the bus it was good enough to walk on. After school mum took me to the doctor to get it checked, they told to rest, it and ice it.

Day 2

Day two of Koru Games didn't happen for me, my ankle was to sore and it would be stupid to go out that day. I was really disappointed because last year I was sick for the three days of Koru Games.

Day 3

Day three was awesome my ankle was fine, and on the bus Mr Ladbrook told me that I could move up to the A team because there wasn't enough girls. So I played my first game, which was a full game because there has to be three girls on the field at a time, and there are only three girls in the team. We lost that game but it was so fun and got a few good touches.

We had another game and again I had a full game. We lost that one also but it was fun being in a good team. I kinda felt like I was letting the team down, but they said they were losing anyway. So that me feel better.

We had one last game and we lost this one as well. It was disappointing but at least we got a last try.

When we got back to school we found out that the Football Boys A team scored first out of about 30+ teams which was incredible, and our Volleyball Boys came third out of about 30+ teams as well!

The care value I showed was respect because I respected all of the teams even if we lost.
I showed leadership by listening and not arguing with the ref.
I was a role model by getting on with the game even if the ref was wrong or something along those lines.

Distinction Evidence: Deputy Head Girl 5

On Wednesday I had Student Council, I turned up on time and had everything that I needed. Everyone else turned up on time and had all of the things that they needed aswell.

Mrs Trotter was running the meeting and not the Head Girl. Mrs Trotter first asked everyone want the homework from last week was. The homework from last week was to fill in this document that Mrs Trotter sent to us. We had to type in what our classes answers were to the questions, does the name Oaklands School reflect the heritage of New Zealand? And If we were to change the name to some thing else that was appropriate what would we change it to? Some people didn't want to change the name and some people like the name Kauri School, Kiwi School, Cabbage Tree School and Pavlova School.

After that we finished up, and they asked if we needed to talk about anything else and we didn't so we packed up and left for lunch.

The care value I showed was Respect because I respected the speaker.
I showed leadership by role modelling to the younger kids by listening.
I was a role model by not fiddling or talking while someone was sharing.

Info Report (The Water Cycle)

The Water Cycle

The water cycle is a process that water goes through between land, ocean and atmosphere. There are four steps throughout the cycle, Evaporation, Condensation, Precipitation and Runoff. There is no start and no end to the cycle. (that's why it's called a cycle.) The water in the water cycle is the same water being re-used and recycled over and over. (like when you recycle things and home.) Throughout the stages the water can change state eg. liquid, solid, gas.

One of the important steps in the water cycle is Evaporation. Evaporation is and invisible process where the sun heats up the water in rivers, lakes or oceans, then the water turns into a gas. (water vapor.) This process is faster on hotter days because the sun heats up the water faster, so it turns into vapor quicker than usual. After the water vapor goes into the sky it forms into clouds... which is called Condensation.

That was the first two paragraphs of my Information Report about The Water Cycle

Monday 29 August 2016

I can recognise and understand a variety of grammatical constructions and some rhetorical patterns

In this unit I have been learning about:
The parts of speech.
The types of nouns.
The types of sentences.

In this unit, I found challenging... the task about different types of nouns eg. proper nouns, abstract nouns, common nouns and collective nouns.

Something new I learnt was how much I already knew about the parts of speech and types of sentences.

Distinction Evidence: Fundraising for Wellington 1

On Tuesday I had been chosen to go and walk around Hornby Mall and Barrington Mall. We had a parent superviser so the teacher could still teach the other kids, her name was Manda and she drove me and one other person too.

We left school at 1:00 so that we would arrive back by 3:00. Firstly we went to te Hornby Mall. We walked around in pairs as this way we would cover more ground. I went with Dylan (the other person that wen twitch me) and we went to a hairdressing salon, they were really nice and said that we should talk to the manager and he would be ready in ten minutes, so we walked around other shops before we went back there. We went to lots of different shops and most of them took a notice and said they would talk to there manager/store owner.

We carried around a notebook and wrote down all of the shops that took a notice. A few shops said that they would get a pack ready by Friday, so Manda (supervisor) said that she could come back on Friday and collect them. Then we went and visited my Aunty because she works in a shop in Hornby Mall.

Then we went to a few shops in The Landing, because we didn't have enough time to go to Barrington, so we went to most of the food shops and got a voucher from Pizza Hut.

After this we went back to school and arrived just on time for the 3:00 bell.

I think that I showed the Care value of Excellence because I kept going even though some shops didn't take a notice or want to give us anything.

Distinction Evidence: Kapa Haka 4

Yesterday I had Kapa Haka, I made sure I turned up on time and that I had my long poi with me.

The first thing we did was talk about the Cultural Festival and that we need to practice lots so that we are ready for it. Then we got set up for a whole run through of our performance. Then Matua Rihari and. Matua Brown said that we were going to have and audience.

After we had been through the whole performance one more time heaps of the years 4,5 & 6 kids (I think) came in and we performed our whole thing to them. Then the teachers and a few students said the things that they liked or enjoyed about the performance.

The care value I showed was respect because I was listening to the teachers when they were speaking.
I showed leadership by being a good role model to the younger kids and doing the right actions with my poi.
I was a role model by not being silly.

Distinction Evidence: Deputy Head Girl 4

Yesterday I had Student Council. Everyone turned up on time which was good because we could start and we didn't have waste time getting people to go and tell them to come. I take the minutes for student council so that means I write down everything we talk about during the Student Council meeting.

After we did the roll we went around the circle and asked any questions we had about the rebuild of Oaklands. I didn't have any questions, but a couple of people did eg: if we have more buildings, will the field still stay big? How hard would it be to put water fountains on the field, because of the pipes not being there? Could we put the Office in the main entrance of the school so vidsitors know where to go?

Then we finished up and everyone left to have there lunch.

The care value I showed was respect because I respected everyone's ideas.
I showed leadership by listening and not speaking while other people were.
I was a role model by not talking while other people were sharing.

Distinction Evidence: Deputy Head Girl 3

Yesterday I had Student Council. Everyone turned up on time which was good because we could start and we didn't have waste time getting people to go and tell them to come. I take the minutes for student council so that means I write down everything we talk about during the meeting eg. What fundraisers we are doing.

After we did the roll we talked a bit about what the homework from last time was, we had was to ask our classes what type of layout that they wanted in the school eg. where would the hall go, or the office and where would the playgrounds go? Some of the things that our class said were, have the senior playground somewhere other than the field because if it's a wet day and the field was shut then we can't go on it. Also they said that the office should be if front of the main entrance so visitors know where to go.

Then we finished up and everyone left to have there lunch.

The care value I showed was respect because I respected everyone's ideas.
I showed leadership by listening and not speaking while other people were sharing there ideas.
I was a role model by not talking while other people were.

Distinction Evidence: Kapa Haka 3

Yesterday I had Kapa Haka, I made sure I turned up on time and that I had my long poi with me.

The first thing we did was start of by having a talk about how close the cultural festival actually is. Then we got set up for a whole run through of our performance. After we went through the whole performance, we all went through it over and over so we all new exactly what we were doing at the right times. Then Mrs Trotter and some of the other people that work in the office came in and we performed for them which I thought was cool because we could perform to an audience.

After we had been through the whole thing a couple more times we all lined up from tallest to shortest and got our uniforms. Once I had got my uniform I was aloud to either go out and play or stay inside and do some singing with Matua Rihari. I chose to stay inside. We sang lots of different songs and then Matua suggested we sing Aotearoa, after we sang that Matua said we should have above to see how many of us wanted that song to be changed to the National Anthem, we all agreed.

Then we went back to class to get our food and go out to morning tea.

The care value I showed was respect because I was listening to the teachers when they were speaking.
I showed leadership by being a good role model to the younger kids and doing the right actions with my poi.
I was a role model by listening to the person speaking.

Distinction Evidence: Deputy Head Girl 2

Yesterday I had Student Council. Everyone turned up on time which was great because we could start and we didn't have waste time getting other people to turn up. I take the minutes for student council so that means I write down everything we talk about during the meeting.

After we did the roll we talked a bit about what the home work from last time was which was, does the name Oaklands represent the heritage of New Zealand? And, if we were to change the name what would it be changed to? Some of the answers we got from our class were Kiwi School, Fern School and Kauri School.

Then once we had finished talking about that we talked about the Pet day we will be having in term 4, we talked about all the guide lines for bringing your pets to school some of the things you have to have are, the animal must me kid friendly, must be on a leash, or in a cage etc and also must have all vaccinations up to date.

Then we wrapped up and everyone left to have there lunch.

The care value I showed was respect because I respected everyone's ideas and opinions.
I showed leadership by listening and not speaking while other people were sharing.
I was a role model by listening to the speaker and not talking to my friends.

Distinction Evidence: Kapa Haka 2

Today I had Kapa Haka, I made sure I turned up on time and that I had my long poi with me.

The first thing we did was start of by having a talk about how close the cultural festival is, it's about three weeks away. Then we got set up for a whole run through of our performance. After we went through the whole performance, everyone say down except the year four girls, they all went through there routine for short poi.

We then had and ther tun through the Tuhurihuri and they said we did and awesome job. After we had been through the whole thing a couple more times we had to do do it once more, then we were free to go out to morning tea. I think we did really well at practice today because we sounded amazing and I can't wait for the night of the Cultural Festival.

The care value I showed was respect because I was listening to the teachers when they were speaking to us.
I showed leadership by being a good role model to the younger kids and doing the right actions and singing the right words.

Distinction Evidence: Kapa Haka 1

Yesterday I had Kapa Haka, I made sure I turned up on time and that I had my long poi with me.

The first thing we did was start of by having a talk about how close the cultural festival actually is. Then we got set up for a whole run through of our performance. After we went through the whole performance, we all sat down and Matua talked to us about how we need to be singing louder because our first song is amazing and finishes on a high note but the next few aren't loud enough.

After we had been through the whole thing a couple more times we had to do do it once more, then we were free to go out to morning tea. We did really well at practice today because we sounded amazing and I can't wait for the night of the Cultural Festival.

The care value I showed was respect because I was listening to the teachers when they were speaking.

Evaluating Author's Purpose

In reading we have been learning to make decisions about the usefulness of the text for the purpose, by using a variety of criteria to evaluate.

We read a range of texts and  evaluated them against four key criteria.
These were:
  • Readability
  • Accuracy
  • Relevance
  • Quality of information/ language.

Here is my evidence to show that I am able to demonstrate this reading skill.
